Past Perfect Video Lesson
To confidently use and understand all English grammer chapters one has to be very careful not to confuse such important verb tenses as the Past Perfect tense. Basically, the Past Perfect tense shows that something had happened before another past event. Therefore, it expresses the idea that something occurred before another action in the past, but can also show that something happened before a specific time in the past.
Form of Past Perfect Simple
Subject + had + past participle
Example with the irregular verb go (went – gone):
- I had gone
- You had gone
- He/She/It had gone
- We had gone
- You had gone
- They had gone
Example with the regular verb live (lived – lived):
- I had lived
- You had lived
- He/She/It had lived
- We had lived
- You had lived
- They had lived
Negative Form of Past Perfect Simple
Subject + had + not + past participle
Notice the common use of hadn’t instead of had not. (e.g. I hadn’t gone.)
When to use the Past Perfect Simple
The Past Perfect takes place before another past action. Therefore, it expresses the idea that something occurred before another action in the past, but can also show that something happened before a specific time in the past.
- He had lived in many different places before he moved to Minnesota.
- moved is in the past tense. But he had lived in many different places before he moved to Minnesota.
- I had taught in many different schools before I came to this one.
- They had never been to New York until last year.
- She’d had many bad jobs in the past, but her new job is okay.
- I’d never seen that before.
