Principally, pronouns can replace nouns or other pronouns. Pronouns like "she," "who," "none," and "you" are used to make sentences less repetitive. There are several types of pronouns, including personal pronouns, demonstrative pronouns, interrogative pronouns, indefinite pronouns, reflexive pronouns, relative pronouns, and intensive pronouns.

How pronouns are used in the English language

Look at the following examples:

Look at Peter!

  • Peter is tall.
  • Peter is fair.

Instead of constantly using the proper noun Peter we can use the pronoun He to avoid repetition:

Look at Peter!

  • He is tall.
  • He is fair.

Have a look at the following examples from the English grammar video:
Peter and Sita are students. Peter and Sita are from Bangalore.

  • They are students from Bangalore.

My friends and I went to a movie yesterday.

  • We went to a movie yesterday.

Possessive Forms

Examples from the grammar video:

  • I am writing with Peter’s pen: I am writing with his pen.
  • I am writing with her Pen.
  • I am using their umbrella.
  • I am using our house.
