Primarily, in the English language a passive construction occurs when the object of an action is made into the subject of a sentence. To be exact, whoever or whatever is performing the action is not the grammatical subject of the sentence. Therefore, in a sentence using the passive voice the performer of the action is not that important. The emphasis is put on the action itself.

How is the Passive Voice constructed?

The English grammar video introduces the formal construction of the passive voice in the English language.

S + (be) + past participle
The Verb be changes according to the subject.

Have a look at the following example sentences:

Present Tense (Passive):

  • You are taught English on this website.
  • This meeting is held every Tuesday.
  • Breakfast is being made.

Past Tense (Passive)

  • This house was painted pink.
  • Her sandwich was made by her mother.

According to this grammar video, the most important point about the passive voice is paying attention to the verb be.

Present Tense: Subject + am/are/is + past participle
Past Tense: Subject + was/were + past participle
Future Tense: Subject + will/going + to be (base form) + past participle
