  • 1. Lesson

  • 2. Exercises

  • 3. Finish

In the construction of questions in indirect speech it depends in the exact kind of question wheter to use direct speech or indirect speech.

Questions in direct speech:

Answer: YES or NO Answer: a (subordinate) clause (e.g. place, time ...)
"Are you ready?" "Why aren't you ready?"
"Is Tom in School?" "Where is Tom?"
"Do you have a new haircut?" "How do you like my new haircut"?
"Have you bought a new car?" "Do you like your new car?"

Questions in indirect speech:

start with “if/whether”; start with the same word as in direct speech
Anna wanted to know ... Anna wanted to know ...
...if I was ready. ... why I was not ready.
... if Tom was in School. ... where Tom was.
... if I had a new haircut. ... how I liked her new heircut.
... if I had bought a new car. ... I liked my new car.

Notice: An indirect question is no real question in the english language, so do not put a question mark.
