This English grammar video concerns itself with the basic functions gerunds. Basically, a gerund is the -ing form of a verb, functioning as a noun. In this exercise it becomes apparent that the gerund can often function as a subject in a sentence. Moreover, gerunds often come after prepositions.

What is a gerund?

It is explained in the video that a gerund is the simple form of a verb (infinitive form) plus -ing. It functions as a noun.

Example Sentence #1

In the first sentence discussed in the video (I like going to the beach.) it becomes clear that I is the subject and like is the verb. Compared to such a structure like I like pizza, in which the word pizza is clearly a noun, it becomes apparent that the gerund going functions as a noun in the example sentence. This gerund is simply formed with the infinitive go and the –ing suffix.

Example Sentence #2

In the sentence Playing baseball is fun the gerund playing not only functions as a noun but also as a subject in this very structure. Often a gerund can be the subject in a sentence. The word is functions as the verb in this sentence.

Example Sentence #3

She’s good at speaking English. In this sentence the gerund is speaking, and as always it acts as a noun. Here, she is the subject and is is the verb. In front of the gerund speaking the preposition at can be found. Gerunds often come after prepositions.
