Gerunds can be formed in an active and passive manner. Moreover, a gerund can function as the subject or the object of a sentence. Also, gerunds and gerund phrases occur after specific constructions, which are illustrated in greater detail in this video exercise, which concerns itself with an English grammar chapter with which students of the English language seem to have great trouble.

Gerunds in Present Tense

There are two forms of gerunds in the present tense: active present tense (Shopping is great) & passive present tense (Our dog loves being washed).

What is a gerund?

It is explained in the video that a gerund is the simple form of a verb (infinitive form) plus -ing. It functions as a noun. Furthermore, it is explained that some words have irregular forms in the building of gerunds: lie-lying, stop-stopping, sit-sitting, etc.

Subject & Object

A gerund can function as a subject (Shopping is great)) or as an object (I usually avoid being seen by my students on weekends) in a sentence structure.
