Present Perfect Simple Video Lesson
This English grammar video shows the basic construction of this grammatically significant verb tense. The Present Perfect Simple tense is used to say that an action happened at an unspecified time before now. The exact time is not important. In this video the formation of this tense is explained. It tells us about Present Participles and, additionally, about affirmative contractions used with this tense.
Form
Subject + has/have + past participle
Notice: the participles can end with the suffix “–ed” (regular verbs) or can be irregular verbs. Past Participles for irregular verbs must be memorised! (e.g. make-made-made, sing-sang-sung, etc.)
Examples
- I have lived
- You have lived
- He has lived
- She has eaten (irregular)
- It has eaten (irregular)
- We have seen (irregular)
- You have seen (irregular)
- They have gone (irregular)
Examples for negative statements
To make the negative one has to add not after the have/has: Subject + has/have + not + past participle
Most people use a contraction: have not = haven’t
- I haven’t lived
- You haven’t lived
- He hasn’t lived
- She has eaten (irregular)
- It hasn’t eaten (irregular)
- We haven’t seen (irregular)
- You haven’t seen (irregular)
- They haven’t gone (irregular)
Affirmative contractions
I have lived = I’ve lived

Helping Verb + Main Verb
- I have had the same car for 10 years.

- main verb had (past participle)
- I haven’t had anything to eat this morning.
